2013 March Madness: Most Feared, Most Disrespected

According to ESPN‘s fan brackets, Miami is the most feared 2-seed in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. (Univ. of Miami)

If your team made the 2013 NCAA Tournament, one of two things is true. Either you’re totally confident your team is winning its bracket, or you’re 100% sure your team got screwed by the Selection Committee.

We can hear you now, Mobsters: “How the hell did a team with 30 wins get a 6-seed?” “We win the SEC Tournament and they stick us with a 12- seed against Wisconsin?”

Yes, life as anything but a 1-seed is unfair. (Miami Hurricanes and Ohio State Buckeyes fans, we know you’ve spent 2 days angry at Kansas. It’s okay. Let it out.)

Rather than try and calm you down, we here at Sideline Mob thought it would be a better idea to instigate everyone instead. We’re like you; we’re sick of “expert’s picks” that show no stones at all. (Yeah, Seth Greenberg, we’re all very impressed you can pick all four #1 seeds. That’s big-time cajones.) Using accrued data from fan brackets (thanks to ESPN and other sites), we’re going to tell you, the fans, what you truly believe about the 2013 edition of March Madness.

Who do you fear? Who do you disrespect? Who do you trust and distrust when the opening tip goes in the air?

2013 March Madness: Most Feared

1. Miami Hurricanes. According to recent data from ESPN’s Tournament Challenge, fans picked Miami as the strongest 2-seed to win in the Round of 64 (98.5%), Round of 32 (89.8%), Sweet 16 (72.8%), and Final Four (23%). Over 11% of voters are picking the Hurricanes to win the national title; that’s the highest percentage for a 2-seed. In fact, more people currently believe Miami will win it all than 1-seeds Kansas and Gonzaga.

2. Michigan Wolverines. Apparently more fans remember Michigan’s 16-0 start to the season than their lackluster finish. Michigan’s chances to win are rated by the public as higher than any other 4-seed in the Sweet 16, Elite Eight and Final Four. Apparently, having National Player of the Year candidate Trey Burke means anything is possible.

3. Oregon Ducks. The Ducks are flying high after their Pac-12 Tournament win; evidently, much of the nation must have seen Oregon knock down all those 3-pointers against UCLA. The Ducks are given nearly a 42% chance to upset Oklahoma State in the Round of 64, and their chances to make the Final Four (however slim) are ranked ahead of ten single-digit seeds, including 5th seed UNLV. Speaking of UNLV…

2013 March Madness: Most Disrespected

1. UNLV Rebels. A full 25% of fans think the Rebels will be victims of the classic 5-12 upset in 2013, as they’re picking the California Golden Bears to drop UNLV in the Round of 64. They’re eliciting the least faith of any 5-seed in every round of the NCAA Tournament. In perhaps the saddest statement of them all, the Rebels are currently being given a 0.1% chance to win the national title – exactly the same percentage as all the 16th seeds.

2. UCLA Bruins. Yes, you read that right. The vaunted UCLA Bruins are getting no love from fans in bracket pools this year. They’re only a 52% favorite to beat 11-seed Minnesota in the Round of 64, and it gets no better from there. They’re only being given a 1.1% chance to make the Final Four out of the South Region. Apparently more people are concerned about the injury to Jordan Adams than have confidence in Larry Drew II and Shabazz Muhammad.

3. Colorado State Rams. This one drives us at Sideline Mob crazy. Colorado State ranks 4th in the nation in rebounding, and is considered by many to be the best team on the glass, bar none. And yet, they’re only being given a 34% chance to beat 9-seed Missouri in their opening game. Beyond that, CSU is only getting an 8.5% chance to upset Louisville in the Round of 32. That’s a worse percentage than three 14th seeds are getting to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. If we’re the Rams, we’re hitting this Big Dance with more spite than anybody.

So what’s your take, Mobsters? Who’s earned your fear – and who’s not getting enough love?
